 Bilingual Children’s Library Assistant, PART-TIME

The Johnson Public Library is seeking a part-time bilingual Children’s library assistant.  

This is a 15 hour per week position, with the possibility of additional hours when the library’s hours of operation are expanded. The schedule will vary and includes evenings and weekends. Flexibility in scheduling is required.

Duties will include:

  • Shelving library materials.
  • Organizing, shifting and reading shelves.
  • Providing assistance to patrons at the front desk, including registering new library card users.
  • Answering phones and directing calls when necessary.
  • Assisting Children’s staff with programs.
  • Other duties as needed/assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bilingual-Spanish preferred.
  • Alpha/numeric sorting abilities.
  • Physical ability to bend or sit down to tend to bottom shelves, and lift or shift at least 20 pounds of books.
  • Operation of standard computer software including Google Docs.
  • Respectful customer service skills.
  • Patience and enthusiasm for children are a must!

 Circulation Library Assistant, PART-TIME

The Johnson Public Library is seeking a Part-Time Library Assistant in the Circulation Department. This is a 20 hour per week position. 

Schedule: 

  • Monday: 10-2
  • Tuesday: 10-2
  • Wednesday: 10-2
  • Thursday: 10-2
  • Friday: Off
  • Saturday: 10-2

Responsibilities:

  • Shelving and Shelf-reading while not scheduled on the desk.
  • Circulation Desk: 
    • check in check out
    • registering new cards
    • collecting fines
    • logging them in
    • lost book payments
    • telephone calls
    • directing patrons to reference desk and to meeting rooms
    • other tasks as assigned.

 Reference Librarian, PART-TIME

The Johnson Public Library seeks a part-time reference librarian to work Monday nights and every other Saturday.  Additional hours may be available to cover vacations.

Education and experience: A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university is required.  MLIS candidates with relevant library experience may be considered.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide reference services to a diverse community of patrons with different levels of literacy and/or technological abilities.
  • Assist patrons with computer tasks including printing, file attachments, downloads and basic troubleshooting.
  • Instruct the public on the use of ebooks, downloadable audio, and other technologies.
  • Work on special projects as assigned by the Department Head and/or Director.
  • Other duties as required.

Skills and Interests:

  • Excellent customer service attitude and people skills required.
  • Must have a comprehensive knowledge of print and computerized reference resources. 
  • Spanish language proficiency is a plus but not required. 

This position requires bending, lifting and reaching.
