What’s all the Hoopla About?!

Posted by / Books

We have been, or at least i have been, a little over due for a new post.

You may or may not know (although I really really hope you do) that we offer a service called Hoopla – think Netflix but for free. The Johnson Public library has offered this service for a while now, but BCCLS picked it up as a system wide service a couple of months ago. What does that mean for Hackensack patrons? No change other than a week or so ago BCCLS announced that patron’s checkouts have doubled from 8 to 16 checkouts a month. Apparently you guys are really loving Hoopla (I’M SOO GLAD!). Some other major news, something I was FAR too excited about, is that Hoopla will not only offer music, movies, tv shows, and audiobooks…but also comic books! You should try out for yourself how amazing the Hoopla service is!

Now I love comics. I am a huge Batman fan, so here are some cool Batman comics I recommend everyone read. DC Universe Animated studios have taken these comics in particular and made them into animated movies…which are part of the JPL DVD collection. I’d suggest read the comic and watch the movie. If you are so inclined, you can just click on the link and place a request for the DVD. Read the comic while you wait for the hold to be fulfilled!

So here goes…

Batman Vol. 1: The Court of Owls, Batman: Night of Owls, Batman Detective Comics Vol. 2: Scare Tactics

All three of these have to do with a different side to Batman we don’t really see, or at least I haven’t seen ’til recently, where he has a son. As the story goes, Batman had a son with Talia Al Ghul, daughter of Ra’s Al Ghul, which was a fact unknown to Bruce until the Talia shows up and essentially dumps the son (Damian) on Bruce. Like I said, it it a very different side of Bruce Wayne/Batman because he is not simply a mentor to a young child like he was with Robin(s) now has to be a father figure as well. And let me tell you, Damian does not make it easy for Bruce. Damian was raised until this point by Ra’s Al Ghul and his league of assassins so he has both good and bad in him. Now toss in a secret society that has be rumored to pull the strings in Gotham City from the shadows – this makes for a really really interesting story line. The first two comics mentioned are directly about Batman and Damian as well as the secret society (The Court of Owls); the third comic also deals The Court of Owls.

So far the DC Universe has made 2 animated movies off the ideas of the Damian and The Court of Owls:

Some other quintessential Batman comics are:

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns

Can old Man Bats keep up and still be the hero everyone knew him to be? Read the comics or watch the movies and see!

Batman: Year One

Get to know Batman for the beginning with this look at Batman’s first year as the masked vigilante/protector of Gotham.

You can find this comic as a collection or as parts 1 & 2. DC Universe made it into two animated films, both available here.

The animated film can be found here.

Here are some Justice League MUST-READs…

Take a look at the story of Aquaman before he was Aquaman…before Arthur Curry was King of Atlantis and how he teams up with the Justice League to save the world he grew up in and the world he becomes the king of.  When time is altered by an evil villain, it is up to the Flash to try to save a world on the brink of a cataclysmic war. It’s a world that could be  running out of time, if The Flash can’t find the villain who altered the timeline!

In a world of public suspicion toward superheroes, loner vigilante Batman must trust an alien Superman, a scarlet speedster The Flash, an accidental teenage hero Cyborg, a space cop Green Lantern, an Amazon Princess  Wonder Woman and an undersea monarch Aquaman in order to save the world.
