The Johnson Public Library in Hackensack NJ – the community’s destination for discovery, learning and making connections – is looking to fill three part-time and one full time position in various departments.

Our busy library sees over 18,000 visitors per month in vibrant, diverse downtown Hackensack. If you love serving the public, have fresh ideas and are a self-starter, we’d love to meet you.

Part time positions start at $13/hr and up based on experience and Spanish fluency. JPL is a civil service, Union, and Equal Opportunity Employer. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. Positions are open until filled.

 

Children’s Department (PT 20 hours)

The Johnson Public Library is seeking an energetic and enthusiastic part-time Children’s Library Assistant. Candidates should have excellent customer service and work well with children of all ages. BCCLS/Leap knowledge and Spanish language skills are a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities for this position would include but not be limited to:

  • Assisting children and parents with book selections.
  • Basic help on the computers – Google docs, slides, etc.
  • Making new library cards and renewing expiring ones.
  • Locating materials on the shelf.
  • Filling loan requests.
  • Shelving all items and shelf-reading as necessary.

Schedule:
Monday: 9-2
Tuesday: 1-5
Wednesday: 5-9

Two Saturdays a month from 9-5 (if not scheduled for Saturday, Friday from 9-5).

Education and experience: Completion of a high school diploma or higher. BCCLS library experience and Spanish language skills a plus.

Periodicals/Teen (PT 20 hours)

The Johnson Public Library is seeking a library assistant to help our Teen Librarian with programming and collection needs, as well as covering our Periodicals Department. Candidates must enjoy working with teenagers as the job will entail assisting with teen programs and outreach and on occasion, leading them on your own.

The ideal candidate will be detail oriented, tech savvy, creative and able to work both independently and in collaboration. We are looking for someone who will take initiative on projects.

Other duties include:

  • Creating and processing book labels
  • Making Google Slides presentations
  • Assisting with preparations for programs
  • Assisting with school visits
  • Pulling books off the shelf from printed shelf lists
  • Creating themed booklists and displays
  • Processing ILL books
  • Keeping marketing materials up to date, including our digital charging stations

Arts and crafts and/or STEM skills are highly desirable.

Schedule:
Monday: 9-1
Tuesday: 10-5
Friday: 9-4
4 additional hours on Wednesday or Thursday depending on coverage needs
Schedule flexibility for vacation coverage is also helpful.

Education and experience: Completion of a high school diploma or higher. BCCLS library experience and Spanish language skills a plus.

Part-time Reference Assistant/Associate (20 hours)

The Johnson Public Library seeks a part-time library associate to work at the Reference Desk.

Schedule:
Monday 9-5
Wednesday 9-1
Thursday 9-1
Friday 9-1

Education and experience:
Completion of a high school diploma or higher. BCCLS library experience and Spanish language skills a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of the reference librarians provide reference services to a diverse community of patrons with different levels of literacy and/or technological abilities.
  • Assist patrons with computer technology including internet, email, printing, file attachments, downloads and basic troubleshooting.
  • Instruct the public on the use of ebooks, downloadable audio, and other technologies.
  • Work on special projects as assigned by the Department Head and/or Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and interests:

  • Excellent customer service attitude and people skills required.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with Microsoft Office products.
  • Familiarity with digital downloads and mobile devices.

Full-time Reference Librarian (35 hours)

The Johnson Public Library seeks a full-time reference librarian whose primary responsibility will be serving the public at the reference desk. This position also includes management of the adult fiction collection.

The schedule includes two nights per week and approximately one Saturday per month:

Schedule:
Monday 1-9
Tuesday 9-5
Wednesday 1-9
Thursday 9-5
Friday 9-5 (off when working Saturday)
Saturdays (approximately one per month)

Education and experience:
MLIS degree (Librarian), or MLIS degree candidate (Library Associate). BCCLS library experience and Spanish language skills a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide reference services to a diverse community of patrons with different levels of literacy and/or technological abilities.
  • Assist patrons with computer tasks including printing, file attachments, downloads, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Instruct the public on the use of ebooks, downloadable audio, and other technologies.
  • Fiction collection development.
  • JerseyCat loans (outside of BCCLS)
  • Work on special projects as assigned by the Department Head and/or Director
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and interests:

  • Excellent customer service attitude and people skills required.
  • Must have a comprehensive knowledge of print and computerized reference resources.

This position requires bending, lifting and reaching.

Salary: meets NJLA minimum. MLIS students will be considered and hired at the Library Associate level. Benefits include Medical, Dental, Pension, and generous vacation leave.
